GOPA-DERD’s team prepares and delivers a relief convoy to As-Sweida
As part of the emergency humanitarian response to those affected by the recent events in As-Sweida Governorate, and with the aim of activating and expanding the scope of this response on the ground, a humanitarian aid convoy arrived in As-Sweida today, accompanied by GOPA-DERD team, headed by Archimandrite Meletius Shattahi, Director General.
The convoy included a shipment of essential first-aid medicine, medications for chronic diseases, psychiatric medications, medications for surgical procedures and dialysis sessions, in addition to medical equipment provided in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), to serve hospitals and health centers in light of the great need and deteriorating health sector in the governorate.
The convoy also included trucks loaded with food, health, and relief supplies, provided in cooperation between GOPA-DERD team and the “Faz’aa” Foundation in Jaramana.
Coinciding with the arrival of the relief convoy, Archimandrite Meletius Shattahi met with His Eminence Metropolitan Antonios Saad, Metropolitan of Bosra, Hauran, and Jabal al-Arab. He conveyed to him details of His Beatitude Patriarch John X’s diligent follow-up of the humanitarian situation in As-Sweida, and ways to enhance support for the archdiocese as a shelter center, and its leading role in meeting the needs of affected and displaced families.
For his part, His Eminence Metropolitan Antonios Saad, noted that this relief convoy represents the first aid provided to the archdiocese, as one of the shelter centers in the governorate.
Archimandrite Meletius also met with GOPA-DERD team in As-Sweida, to discuss the implementation of the emergency intervention plan and intensified support. He praised the team’s speed and effectiveness in responding to the challenges of work on the ground, the difficult humanitarian situation, and the growing need.
