Rehabilitation of Irrigation Canals and Drains … Supporting Farmers and Enhancing Production in Rural Hama
GOPA-DERD’s “KAMEH” project team in Hama, implemented a project to clean and maintain a section of the B6 agricultural drainage canal in the Qalaat al-Madiq area, in cooperation with Caritas Austria.
The project aimed to support the agricultural sector and improve the efficiency of agricultural drainage networks.
The canal section extends from near the main irrigation canal to the main drainage outlet, passing through the Al-Tuwaynah area, and spanning a length of approximately 4,200 linear meters.
The project was implemented in response to challenges affecting the drain’s efficiency, specifically the accumulation of silt, debris, and waste within and along its banks, as well as dense aquatic vegetation growth which resulted in reduced water flow velocity and drainage efficiency.
The project involved removing sediment, debris, weeds, and aquatic vegetation, alongside cleaning the drain’s banks and rehabilitating its cross-section, thereby improving water flow and enhancing the efficiency of the agricultural drainage network.
The project also contributes to curbing the spread of the water hyacinth and improving water resource management, thereby enhancing farmers’ utilization of the targeted agricultural lands and supporting the sustainability of agricultural production in the area.
