Towards a Humanitarian Response that Achieves Quality and Accountability ... A training Workshop in Deir ez-Zor
Over three days, a training workshop entitled “Strengthening the Foundations of Collective Accountability in Syria” was conducted in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, as one of the activities implemented within the project “Strengthening the Foundations of Humanitarian Collective Accountability in Syria”, supported by H2H Fund, and implemented by GOPA-DERD in technical coordination with CHS Alliance and Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB).
This workshop invited the Alliance’s partner organizations: Power of Moment, UNFPA, IOM, WeWorld, Suryana, and GOPA-DERD, as part of joint efforts to enhance the quality of humanitarian work and establish principles of accountability towards affected populations.
The workshop was attended by about 50 humanitarian workers, representing a wide range of local organizations and associations operating in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, in addition to the presence of representatives from the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor and relevant government agencies. This contributed to strengthening dialogue and coordination between the various actors in humanitarian work at the local level.
The workshop also focused on promoting a shared understanding of the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), particularly the nine commitments that form the framework for improving the quality of humanitarian programs and enhancing accountability to affected communities, as well as the mechanisms for implementing these principles within the Syrian context, with an emphasis on developing complaints and feedback mechanisms, enhancing the participation of local communities, improving coordination among humanitarian actors, and establishing a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
The workshop adopted an interactive training methodology that combined artistic presentations, case studies, group work exercises, and open discussions, which allowed participants to exchange practical experiences, review challenges and lessons learned, and discuss applicable solutions that are appropriate to the operational context in Deir ez-Zor.
The workshop concluded with a closing session dedicated to developing individual and institutional plans and commitments, during which participants expressed the practical measures they will implement within their institutions, with the aim of enhancing the quality of humanitarian programs, consolidating the principles of accountability, and improving the response to the needs of local communities, in order to contribute to achieving a more effective and sustainable humanitarian impact.
